About the event
Massive Upper GI Bleed: High-Stakes Interprofessional Simulation
A high-intensity, hands-on simulation designed for Physicians, Nurses, and Allied Health Professionals managing acute gastrointestinal hemorrhage in community and regional settings.
This 2-hour session blends procedural mastery with real-world team coordination—focusing on rapid stabilization, airway control, and efficient activation of the Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) in a crashing upper GI bleed.
For Physicians:
Master the SALAD intubation technique using a live, working SALAD head to simulate active hemorrhage and contamination. Gain hands-on experience in Blakemore tube insertion for uncontrolled variceal bleeding, including setup, insertion, and troubleshooting.
For Nurses:
Reinforce rapid MTP activation pathways, product ratios, and handoff communication. Review rapid infuser setup and troubleshooting, coordination with the blood bank, and prioritization of interventions during active resuscitation.
Team-Based Focus:
Interprofessional collaboration under pressure—closed-loop communication, leadership transitions, escalation of care, and system readiness for catastrophic GI hemorrhage.
What’s Included:
- Real-time, immersive simulation with high-fidelity procedural models
- Guided debriefs highlighting both clinical performance and system optimization
- Pre-course primer on MTP workflows, airway contamination management, and procedural checklists
- Hands-on practice with Blakemore setup, intubation in a contaminated field, and rapid infuser operation
- Interdisciplinary coaching from emergency, critical care, and nursing faculty
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Lead or effectively participate in the resuscitation of a patient with a massive upper GI bleed
- Safely and efficiently perform SALAD intubation in an actively bleeding airway
- Correctly prepare and insert a Blakemore tube for variceal hemorrhage
- Activate and coordinate MTP and transfusion logistics effectively
- Optimize communication and task delegation in a high-acuity, time-critical setting
